Why direct cremations are particularly vulnerable to price competition

The UK funeral market appears to have turned direct cremations into what feels like a price war. With the UK varying significantly among providers, our owner Amanda-Louise looks on some key points:

• Online national operators changed the consumer's reference price - Specialist direct-cremation companies built businesses around a simple, low-cost, online proposition.
• ‍TV adverts continue to promote no fuss cremation services as a cheaper alternative, comparing to a traditional funeral which of course is misleading as its not like for like
• Online companies can have telesales approach and often high pressure tactics to sign up to their services, often with lower overheads than a high street funeral directors as they cannot offer a personal service
• Customers can now compare prices before making the phone call - The CMA's 2021 rules forced funeral directors to publish standardised pricing information, making comparison considerably easier.
• The volume economics favour specialists - a business doing hundreds or thousands of direct cremations can build its whole operation around them. It can optimise collection routes, staff utilisation, mortuary capacity, crematorium relationships, paperwork and online marketing. A traditional local funeral director may have to maintain premises, vehicles, staff and facilities for a much broader range of services. This competition isnt simply online -v- independent as their offering is not the same across the board.
• ‍Funeral Cost Index - the competition isn't either independent vs national. Interestingly, price data shows some large corporate groups pricing direct cremation very aggressively too.

Is there a catch?

So with such a range of prices being offered in the UK for an unattended cremation, can families compare like for like?

Of course a direct cremation is not just a cremation with no-one present. Its going to involve professional collection, looking after the deceased appropriately and safely, paperwork and legal compliance, staffing, mortuary premises, crematoria costs, coffin, transfer to and from the crematorium, insurance, 24 hour availability, ashes handling and so on.

So why is there a difference in pricing?

Online companies are not part of one of the two trade associations, so are not independently inspected. Their mortuary and crematoriums are the other side of the country from Somerset, and there isnt the opportunity to spend time with a loved one*, nor have their clothing changed, items placed into their coffin or opportunity to attend with the funeral director to witness the committal, or to support the family to have a separate memorial gathering.

*and if they do offer this, they are paying for a local funeral director to use their local funeral home to accommodate this - that means they would be transferring the deceased from their warehouse mortuary to the local funeral director for a "viewing" then transferring back again to their mortuary facilities

Independent funeral directors offer a varying level of support in their direct cremation services. Some offer the basic level same as the model that the online companies use, to those offering a more personal and flexible approach.

Cheap -v- Value -v- Quality

It depends of course on the provider's model of branding and marketing as well as their overheads and profit margins.

In any business commerce, their ethos can be either to offer "cheap" that will only offer the minimal in their product or service, whereas others go down the "value" route (for example value being local and not online) to those offering "quality" services offering a more flexible approach, built on their reassurance and trust.

Regulation in the Funeral Industry

We, like our fellow professional funeral directors in this sector, as well as families across the UK, urge the Government to regulate the funeral industry. With after the high profile Legacy Independent Funeral Directors scandal has also brought the consequences of inadequate oversight into sharp focus: Robert Bush was sentenced to 20 years in July 2026 after widespread fraud and serious mistreatment of deceased people. That case isn't evidence that cheap direct cremation providers generally operate improperly, but it does underline why price alone cannot be the measure of a funeral provider's quality or safety.
